German Capture of Kiew In the initial attack on the Soviet Union, Panzer Group 1, under General von Kleist, had punched deep into the Western Ukraine, unhinging the Russian front at the junction of the Russian 5th and 6th Armies. Within a fortnight von Kleist had captured Berdichev, bringing the battle to the gates of Kiev and threatening an encirclement of five entire Soviet Armies. The Rumanian attack, delayed until July 1st, provided the anvil upon which the shattered Russian Armies were increasingly pressed by the blows of von Kleist's armour. The Rumanian armies, however, were neither experienced nor particularly well equipped, and the German armies of Army Group South were comparatively disadvantaged by earlier priorities to concentrate the force of the attack in the centre of the front. Advancing against Soviet forces nearly two million strong, and incorporating fully half the armoured and mechanised units of the Red Army, the German infantry was unable to fully exploit the advantage of surprise and confusion. Along with Manstein and Guderian, Erwin Rommel ranks as one of the great German commanders of World War II. Following a staff position with Hitler during the campaign in Poland, Rommel was given command of a Panzer division for the invasion of France. Though perhaps owing his position to his acquaintance with Hitler, Rommel justified his appointment by his brilliant leadership in the field. Sent to Libya in 1941, Rommel took command of the newly formed German Afrika Korps. It was in North Africa that Rommel established himself as an exceptional tactician and strategist. In the interwar years he had written a classic textbook on infantry tactics, in which he had developed the theory of forward control. These precepts he now combined with the tactics of blitzkrieg, leading his forces in a series of stunning victories, and achieving for the Afrika Korps, as well as himself, lasting international renown. The capture of Tobruk in 1942 earned Rommel his Field Marshall ' s baton, and a further advance into Egypt took him to within 60 miles of Alexandria. At El Alamein, suffering from chronic shortages of fuel and supplies, he was finally defeated by an overwhelmingly superior force, but in the long withdrawal through the Western Desert, Rommel demonstrated a mastery of defensive tactics , that enabled the Afrika Korps to extricate themselves intact for a final, if ultimately futile, last stand in Tunisia. Since so many people ask me where these guns came from and how much they cost, I have decided to explain everything in this section. I will describe how we obtained each individual gun and how it was upgraded. Hopefully some of you guys out there can start your collection(s) one day! M1A1 Thompson : This was our 1st gun purchased in the collection. We bought it from airsoftAtlanta.com for $330 (at that time). About 1 year later we added a real wood stock, pistol grip, and front grip to it. I will explain how we did this later in this message. This gun was also upgraded with an M120 spring, new gears, new piston and piston head, and a new tightbore barrel (4.03 I believe). M1 Garand : This was originally purchased from Evike.com as a TM M14. It was converted to the M1 Garand, and uses real wood and real metal parts. I will explain how we did this later in this message, as well. VFC 1918 A2 BAR : This was the most difficult of the guns to get our hands on. I was fortunate to get a good deal from Evike.com, and bought this gun for $800 - A deal you won't see again anytime soon. While $800 is still expensive, it didn't hit me very hard, because I sold off a few other airsoft guns to get the cash for it. This gun was hard to get, because it took me about 5 months of waiting and persistent calling to make sure it got to me. It is my favorite gun of the collection for that reason. The Dieppe Raid, also known as The Battle of Dieppe or Operation Jubilee, during the Second World War, was an Allied attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe, Seine-Inférieure on the Northern coast of France on 19 August 1942. Over 6000 infantrymen, predominantly Canadian, were supported by large British naval and Allied air force contingents. The objective was to seize and hold a major port for a short period, both to prove it was possible and to gather intelligence from prisoners and captured materials while assessing the German responses. No major objectives of the raid were accomplished. 3623 of the 6086 men who made it ashore were either killed, wounded, or captured. The Allied air forces failed to lure the Luftwaffe into open battle, and lost 119 planes, while the Royal Navy suffered 555 casualties.
